Classic Lime Margarita

4.881 ratings

Blanco tequila, orange liqueur, and freshly squeezed lime juice are shaken hard with ice until the tin turns frosty, producing a tart, bracing cocktail with a clean agave finish. A half-salted rim lets you choose between salty and plain with every sip.

Method

  1. Run the lime wedge around half of the outer rim of a rocks glass, then roll that edge in a saucer of kosher salt and fill the glass with fresh ice.

  2. Add the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and agave syrup to a cocktail shaker and fill it three quarters full with ice.

  3. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12 to 15 seconds, until the outside of the tin is painfully cold and frosted.

  4. Strain the margarita into the prepared glass over the ice and perch the lime wedge on the unsalted side of the rim.

Zest note from the test kitchen

Salt only the outside of the rim so crystals do not drop into the drink and gradually make the last few sips taste briny.
